ANTONI GAUDI

1852 - 1926

Antoni Gaudi was a Spanish architect who worked primarily in Barcelona.
His famously unique style is one of sumptuosly flowing, earthy, and tactile organic forms incorporating a natural/nonrectalinear engineering logic.
The most famous of his works is the Sagrada Família cathedral,
which he began working on in 1915, and remains in progress today.

NIKE MAGNET COMMERCIAL

by NIKE

Nike marketing periodically comes up with the greatest adreniline pumping athletic inspiration.
If one can ignore all the Lance Armstrong mess...this one stands as one of the best.
The energy current and almost hauntingly beautiful American landscape cinematography
makes the the hairs stand up on the back of my neck,
and even years later, still psyches me up to go for a long ride.
Great ending too. :)

ALL IS FULL OF LOVE

by BJORK

Fantastic video.
It still holds up amazingly well over a decade later, which is particularly impressive for video,
and even more so for sci fi concept/effects work.
Regardless wether her distinctively impressionistic style of work tickles your fancy,
Bjork is a fascinatingly unique, talented, multifaceted, and innovative artist.
There's just no one else quite like her.

ALFONSE MUCHA

1860 - 1939

Alfonse Mucha
was an extremely prolific Czech illustrater and painter whose uniquely gorgeous commercial work famously defined art nouveau style illustration, though he himself disagreed wth the art nouveau definition being applied to his work, and was less interested in the commercial work for which he recieved such acclaim, than his fine art painting, which was much more important and worthwhile in his view.

( Some manipulations have been applied to these images
to account for fading / reproduction lossiness.
The artists original work may have been less high contrast / color satured, more pastel in their original character. )

EARTHRISE

by NASA and the Apollo crews

 Earthrise

 Earthrise

Photos by the Apollo astronauts/NASA.
( Some manipulations applied. )

On December 21, 1968, Frank Borman, William Anders, and James Lovell Jr., of the Apollo 8 crew became the first humans to leave Earth orbit and observe our home planet from far enough away to see it in it's entirety as a globe.
They continued out into space and entered the Moon's orbit on December 25th, looping 10 times around it before returning home on December 27th.
That 240,000 mile journey into deep space, a distance approximately 30 times the width of the Earth, roughly 30 times farther away from Earth than any human had traveled before,
and around the dark side of the Moon where no communication was possible,
was perhaps the most frightening, risky, and nerve-racking adventure ever attempted by man.
If the Earth was the size of a basketball, the Moon would be the size of a softball and about half the length of a basketball court away.

It's hard to imagine a more hair on the back of the neck raising feeling than sitting precariously in a flimsy little eggshell of a bleeding edge technology craft out in deep inhospitable space, staring back at safe Earth visible as only a tiny blue ball 240,000 miles away.

On July 20th, 1969, while Michael Collins manned the orbitting command module, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin of Apollo 11 landed on the Moon and stepped out of their craft to become the first humans to touch the surface of another planet.
Less than 200 years earlier, (or a little more than 2 lifetimes ago), riding a hot air balloon, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier was the first human in mankind's 200,000 year (roughly 2000 lifetime long) history to rise above the Earth's surface.

Man has gone beyond Earth orbit only 9 times, on the Apollo missions 7-17, 1968-1972, and touched the moon on 6 of those missions. The last was Dec 11, 1972.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Rabbit," said Pooh to himself.
"I like talking to Rabbit. He talks about sensible things.
He doesn't use long, difficult words, like Owl.
He uses short, easy words, like 'What about lunch?' and 'Help yourself, Pooh'."
